Thanks, Gloria! Kind words...

I think what happens in the business world is that ppl tend to expect

trouble and arm up for it: it's a pity coz then they can't develop a

trusting working relationship. And the wheel turns as they all circle the

karma of retribution and hurt. Territorial instincts gone wild, an' all

that... The extreme case would be, I suppose, the sociopath type who is

completely unable to empathise with his

target/victim/customer/employee/voter... :(

Yet you still have an incredible success story. Anytime people

>will be so loyal as to show this devotion without getting pay..is

>incredible.

They wanted to believe in us: one of them was sore when it all fell

through, but she was young and she soon found a job anyway. But words

couldn't express what we felt when everyone came in (twice) on the

following Monday, especially when they were not well-off people!

(Incidentally, Jane and I weren't well-off either: we paid ourselves 14

pounds a week each for three months, and perhaps they guessed that... We

had to inspire, it's all we had -- other than a great possibility.)

Hey, its easy to be liking getting rich. There seems to be a

>cultural myth that profit not only is a main concern, but must be the "only

>concern" of business.

Yes, and we're pressured into believing it...

This adversarial relationship of owners vs workers may

>even be worsening in an era of more job mobility.

I've found it fluctuates: fear of change? If anything makes the population

scared of their livelihoods, the survival imprinting kicks in strongly and

it's "devil take the hindmost". I sometimes think that the best way to

control a population is to alienate them from each other, scare them

through their territorial/survival instincts and get them to run to you as

the only hope they've got: then you can get them to tow your line without a

single bleat! (Cynical, moi?) :)

It was a special experience, and I'll never lose it. One of the best things

about it is I don't have to embellish... :)

How many bosses get invited to parties, even when

>they stay in business?

Yeah, right! Of course, it would have been *really* cool if the business

had worked out... but I guess we needed to learn the flipside, and see the

absurdity of the wrong approach too :))
