Guest guest
Chris just sent me an email inferring that identity & individuality are not quite the same. I wonder if he might share the concept here? It helped me Chris. Letting identity go isn't easy ~ yet knowing there still is individuality which won't be utterly destroyed, allows it to go easier. Wondering .. good topic for discussion .. Colette ~*~
Guest guest
Collette, Interesting question! In the case of a person (that is, not cars or mathematical equations), you could look at it one way like this. -Individuality is any characteristic or set of characteristics that distinguish one body, mind or body/mind from another. These characteristics are something that we usually think are subject to change over time. So we like to say that I grew up, or got sick, got married, got a new job, changed my hair color and body shape (diet and exercise), etc. -Identity is usually a subset of the above set of characteristics, and is who we really take ourselves to be. These characteristics are usually NOT something that we think are subject to change over time. These are who I really am. Conventionally speaking, I might say that what I am is this set of values and abilities and memories, as well as this overall bodily form. These things don't change (too much). That is conventionally. But what about the non-dual perspective? In that perspective, individuality would be ANY name and form combination, even memories, values, etc. Tibetan Middle Way Buddhism has a name for all those things: the "basis of designation." Identity is what we really are, emptiness, consciousness, etc. --Greg At 09:32 AM 8/2/99 , Colette T wrote: >Colette T <colette > >Chris just sent me an email inferring that identity & individuality are >not quite the >same.
