She also has another book - regarding spiritual growth, the chakras, and the

body/mind - titled "Eastern Mind: Western Body". Excellent books!

Hi Jill:

It's nice to hear from you.

Much of what I've learned came from classes and not books. However, David

Frawley has some good books, Tantra Yoga and the Wisdom Goddesses (Passage

Press) is excellent. Wheels of Life by Anodea Judith is a good, basic text

on the chakras (Llewellyn). The primary bija is listed for the chakras and

she has the Sanskrit for each petal...you will need to get a copy of the

Sanskrit alphabet to read the petal sounds. You can also go to Amazon.com

and do some basic searching they have a large base of books from India.

Namaste,

Linda

Thanks Linda and Jill for bringing this up. Just a quick addition. The Hindu

Shakti mantras are slightly different from the Jain Shakti mantras. SO-HUM is

a good mantra for the Heart Center. SO as you breathe in and HUM as you

breathe out with a focus on the middle of the chest. SO means THAT and HUM

means I. That I AM! Yantras and colors can also differ somewhat in different

traditions. All these are ways to bring awareness to experiencing the Shakti

in the Heart. For those with an active Kundalini, this focus on the Heart

center leads to superconscious states and visions.

All paths go somewhere. No path goes nowhere. Paths, places, sights,

perceptions, and indeed all experiences arise from and exist in and subside

back into the Space of Awareness. Like waves rising are not different than

the ocean, all things arising from Awareness are of the nature of Awareness.

Awareness does not come and go but is always Present. It is Home. Home is

where the Heart Is. Jnanis know the Heart to be the Finality of Eternal

Being. A true devotee relishes in the Truth of Self-Knowledge, spontaneously

So-Hum is indeed a powerful mantra. It also mimics the natural sound of

breath - "So" with the inhalation, and "Hum" with the exhalation - which

makes it easy to lock into. I use it often with my yoga students during

meditation. You can also visualise a hollow tube running from the crown

to muladhara. The energy (prana) of flows down the tube with the

inhalation and upward with the exhalation (still mentally chanting

So-Hum).

And yes the Yantras and other symbols can differ between various

yoga/hindu traditions. I use the Tantric symbology in my personal

practice, and would be interested to learn more about others.

OM Shanti

Michele

Jnanis know the Heart to be the Finality of Eternal Being. A true devotee
