Thanks for the insights, I'm posting this on both lists as well. BTW, here is a link including the 1994 New Yorker article on SYDA YOGA: http://www.ex-cult.org/Groups/SYDA-Yoga/leave.txt My friend is not a trained psychologist, but he has had many disfunctional relationships and up to a few years ago, had lacked self-esteem for most of his life. So his antennae are very sensitive to these dynamics when he encounters them. At one time, he believed he should eat as little food as possible (he was almost anemic), never go outside other than going to his full-time job, never have sex with his wife, never eat in restaurants, because that would waste time he could be meditating. He'd chant his mantra tens of thousands of times daily, spending 6-8 hours a day at home on the meditation cushion. A few years after all his charismatic-leader paths, he dug deeply into Nisargadatta, Ramesh, Wei Wu Wei, Atmananda, and Nagarjuna. Now, after many shifts, realizations and insights, the self-esteem problem is totally gone, and he's one very, very happy person! I asked him to write up something on his observations, and he said he'd have something for us later this week. --Greg
