The devastating part of the God/Self/Source awakening isn't about losing one's distinctive individuality (unless one had an extremely narcissistic attachment to it). It's the profound aloneness of the One Self. El speaketh Well -------- (Do you see that El rhymes with Well? :--). The Profound Aloneness is there.......from the perspective of the mind. In True Aloneness, there is Wholeness, as the mind that is to be frightened by the Aloneness (as it sees its identity in diversity) has disappeared. Coming out of the True Aloneness which is Wholeness, and seeing diversity again, there is bound to be a process of integration and understanding of the knowledge gained until it becomes permanent. Both are true. Profound Aloneness and Profound Wholeness. And of course profound suffering is the nature of things. Which probably leads to seeking Wholeness in the first place.
