11. Ineffable Light

===============================================

 

The Light of Lights, above, below

Shines forth in darkness, banishing

The shadow spirits of darkest night

>From within the human soul.

 

Like a revelation of deepest tint,

It bursts forth into our innermost thought

Giving our minds a thing to ponder

When everything about is sleeping.

 

Not for a moment does it stop.

It does not pause to brood and wonder;

But knowing what it is to do,

It keeps its focus and does its work.

 

Ineffable Light no mortal eye sees,

But this does not stop its working.

Within the Mystic Vision of Holy People

It is seen for what it is in truth.

 

God is Light. In Him no darkness dwells,

But He is hidden in His Glory

By the Veil that covers the Holy of Holies

In the Temple of a person’s heart.

 

Only Inner Vision can see Him

In His natural element, so hidden;

Though through the Holy Light shared by others,

A glimpse of His Glory can be seen.

 

The Children of Ineffable Light see

What mortal folk cannot imagine.

They see Him doting about His House

With a water-pot, caring for His Flowers.

 

The little flowers of Saint Francis

Cannot be compared to the Holy Eden

Where the Ineffable Light shines so brightly

That all other things are darkened.

 

When one draws near to that Holy Light

Without the perception to see it,

He sees nothing but Divine Darkness,

And fear of it fills his soul.

 

But upon the awakening of the Inner Light

The darkness one sees is transformed

Into the Light it truly is, not hidden

But to those whose hearts are impure.
