So he did and subsequently helped build one of the most successful diamond businesses around. As outlined in his book, "The Diamond Cutter: The Buddha on Strategies for Managing Your Business and Your Life," Roach attributes his success to principles and practices from Buddhism. Just before Roach's departure on a three-year retreat, Amazon.com's Brian Bruya got in one last interview with the wunderkind monk on how to make it in business and come out shining like a saint. Transforming Business: An Interview with Michael Roach ****************************************************** Amazon.com: After reading "The Diamond Cutter," I have so many questions to ask. First, you're an honors graduate from Princeton University, but you're also a Tibetan Buddhist monk. Why, originally, did you turn your back on all of the doors that must have been open to you to study Tibetan Buddhism? Michael Roach: Not long before I graduated from Princeton, my mother died, and shortly afterward my father and brother. So, although I could have gone on to be a professor or something like that, I felt like I needed to get away and think about life and death, and what makes these things happen. I went to India, to where the Dalai Lama lives, and began studying Buddhism. There also happened to be a Mongolian monastery of Tibetan Buddhism in New Jersey that was set up after World War II, and I studied there as well. After about eight years of study, I was fluent enough in Tibetan to go back to India and enter Sera Monastery, one of the great universities of Tibetan Buddhism. After 21 years in total of study, I earned the geshe degree there. < snip > >>
