MYSTIC-POEMS AND SAYINGS OF WISDOM FROM: TUKARAMA, YESHUA, RUMI, SULTAN

BAHU, HAFIZ, IBN AL-ARABI, AND KABIR

A SEA OF LOVE

I have found a Sea of Love

an inexhaustible flood;

I have opened a treasure of spiritual knowledge,

it diffuses the lustre of a million suns

arisen in Thy worshipper's souls.

Unexpectedly

without an effort

I have heard the Eternal Secret,

I have learned to know God.

-- (TUKARAMA, "Poems of Tukarama")

THE TEMPLE OF THE HUMAN HEART

I offer my prayer in the temple of my heart --

the only true place to worship God.

I stand in supplication, I bow in obeisance,

I tender my prayer without break in its repetition.

Hanging between life and death

my heart burns in the fire of separation from Him.

The Path indicated by the Prophet is true, O BaHU:

following it one can find God.

-- ("Sultan Bahu," R.S. Books)

THE SKY HUNTER

Keep

Ringing the bell,

Playing the tamboura, calling for Him.

For you

Have touched something holy inside

With your spirit-body

And now your eyes look broken

Without His sacred Presence near.

The heart is like that: blessed and ruined

Once it has known

Divine beauty,

Then,

It becomes a restless sky hunter.

The lover keeps circling in their being

Their sweetest moments

With God

Needing to kiss

His face

Again.

ALLAH, ALLAH, ALLAH

Now

The sky-drum plays

All by itself in my head

Singing all day long

"Allah, Allah,

Allah."

-- (HAFIZ poems from "The Gift,")

THIS WORLD IS A BRIDGE

YesHUa said, "The world is a bridge. Pass over it, but do not

build your dwelling there."

-- (Inscription from a mosque at

Fatehpur Sikri, India, found in "The Unknown Sayings of Jesus")

IF ONE DOES NOT STAND IN THE DARKNESS

"If one does not stand in the darkness, one will not be able

to see the Light."

TRUTH SEEKS THE WISE

"For truth seeks the wise and the righteous."

FORTUNATE IS THE WISE PERSON WHO HAS SOUGHT TRUTH

"The savior answered and said, 'Fortunate is the wise person

who has sought truth, and when it has been found, has rested

upon it forever, and has not been afraid of those who wish to

trouble him.'"

-- (more from, "The Unknown Sayings of Jesus")

THE SAINTS, A DOORWAY TO ALLAH

Whoever wants to sit with God,

let him sit in the presence of the Saints.

CHOOSE THE LOVE OF THE LIVING ONE

Love of the dead does not last,

because the dead will not return.

But love of the living

is in every moment fresher than a bud,

both to the inward and the outward eye.

Choose the love of that Living One

who is everlasting, who offers you

the wine that increases life.

Do not say, 'We have no entrance to that King.'

Dealings with the generous are not difficult.

-- (RUMI, "Rumi Daylight")

CONTEMPLATE THE LIVING ONE

YesHUa said, "Contemplate the Living One as long as you live,

otherwise you might die and then try to see the Living One,

and you will be unable to see."

-- (YESHUA, The Gospel of Thomas)

SEEING VISIONS OF THE BELOVED

Since our vision is so limited, let's go!

Let our sight be dissolved in the seeing of the Friend.

Our sight for His -- what an exchange!

-- (Rumi Daylight)

LIGHT IN THE BRIDAL CHAMBER

"If anyone becomes a son of the Bridal Chamber, he will

receive the Light. If anyone does not receive it while he

is here, he will not be able to receive it in the other place."

-- (The Gospel of Philip, "The Nag Hammadi Library in English")

WE WERE CREATED TO SEE BOTH WORLDS -- SEEN AND UNSEEN

Know also that the Reality has described Himself as being the

Outer and the Inner, Manifest and Unmanifest. He brought the

Cosmos into being as constituting an Unseen Realm and a Sensory

Realm, so that we might perceive the Inner though our unseen

and the Outer through our sensory aspect.

-- (IBN AL-ARABI)

SPIRITUAL AWAKENING

O my heart! the Supreme Spirit,

the Great Master, is near you:

wake up, wake up!

Run to the feet of your Beloved: for

your Lord stands near to your

head.

You have slept for unnumbered ages;

this morning will you not wake?

SALVATION CAN BE KNOWN BY THE LIVING

O Friend! hope for Him whilst

you live, Know whilst you live,

understand whilst you live: for

in life salvation abides.

If your bonds be not broken whilst

living, what hope of deliverance

in death?

It is but an empty dream, that the soul

shall have Union with Him just because

it has passed from the body:

If He is found NOW, He is found THEN,

If not, we do but go to dwell in the City

of Death.

If you have Union now, you shall have

it hereafter.

Bathe in the Truth, know the true Master,

have faith in the true Name!

Kabir says: 'It is the Spirit of the Quest which helps; I am

the slave of this Spirit of the Quest.'

-- (SANT KABIR, "Songs of Kabir," Rabindranath Tagore)

THE WAY OF ALLAH'S HEART

My Master has sown in my heart

the jasmine of God's Name.

He has taught me how to captivate

the heart of my charming Beloved.

He keeps me in His thoughts eternally.

He always makes me do His will.

He Himself grants me His wisdom, O BaHU.

He Himself molds me into His own real Self.

Love flourishes in that heart

in which glows the Name of Allah.

The love of Allah is like the fragrance of musk --

even a thousand wrappings cannot hold it in;

or like the sun, which cannot be hid behind one's fingers,

or like a river that cannot be stopped in its course.

My Friend is in me, in my Friend am I;

there is no distance left between us.

-- (SULTAN BAHU, "Sultan Bahu," R.S. Books)
