Guest guest
Hi Mike, >Thanks for all the interesting astrology info. I confess that I >know next to nothing about even basic astrology, much less the influence >of asteroids ;-) > >Would you have any recommendation for a source of information (book, >website, etc.) that could satisfy a little of my curiosity about astrology? Sure. For general good reading, pick up Jess Stearn's _A Time for Astrology_. He is not an astrologer, he's a journalist... but what he's done is to interview a number of prominent and good astrologers and discuss their specialties, giving a lot of conversation with them. And because he zeroes in on each one's special expertise, it's a good book for astrologers to have too. Alan Oken wrote a series of three books that I have in paperback, and I've used his _The Horoscope, the Road and Its Travelers_ as a textbook for beginning classes in astrology. These books are very good, but they aren't in print now. What you can buy new is his excellent text that combines most of the three books... I think it's called _Alan Oken's Astrology_. If you happen to see the original three books in a second-hand store, you'll save a little money and get some very interesting material that was left out of the combined book. ) _Don't_ buy his book on soul-centered astrology by accident... you need to learn basic astrology before tackling that stuff. There are many good books on astrology, but the most famous American astrologer was Evangeline Adams, and if you find any of her books in the second-hand shops, you won't be disappointed. The computer program called Astrolog is FREE on the net... it's in a number of places and you should be able to find it easily. A horoscope is a map of the Sun, Moon, planets, etc., for an exact time in relation to an exact place on Earth... so it shows you what degree was rising in the East and where every planet was. This program will calculate any horoscope for you and display it in wonderful graphics. You just have to type in a date and time and place... you can get the approximate longitude and latitude from an atlas or a good map. You can ask for NOW and see the position of the planets right now, in relation to where you are. You can calculate any horoscope for thousands of years, if you want to download the ephemeris files for those past years. And you can set the graphics moving... and watch the solar system in motion during a particular period. This program's calculations are accurate... I checked it out before I started using it. And the graphics are wonderful and lots of fun. Unfortunately, if you use a Mac, the program isn't quite so wonderful... I haven't seen a version yet for the Mac that's menu-driven, and I hate trying to remember all those commands. Re. astrologers on the net... You can get a horoscope free. You can get an "analysis" for ten bucks, but that's all it's worth... it's a computerized job, like picking out some relevant paragraphs from a book and combining them. A real live astrologer looks at the chart as a whole, at the patterns that are formed... and with the book knowledge in his/her head, uses intuition to discuss the horoscope as a whole. It takes time to write out a really individual analysis, so the good astrologers' work isn't cheap. The books and the program I've recommended are Western, earth-centered astrology. If you really get interested in this, you may want to get into sidereal astrology, which is sun-centered, or the Vedic astrology from India. But this is where I would start. Enjoy!
