For some reason my first name Gerald was shortened to Jerry -- l don't know whose decision this was. Hey, you're spelling it right and l'm spelling it wrong. lt is l who should apologize for having doubted your love for lan. l've never missed an Olympics, going back to 1960. l always feel a strong connection to all the athletes. lt's not as pure as it once was, but there's still no other athletic competition like it. Because of the 15 hour time difference everything is being presented on tape delay here, which is actually good from the standpoint that the tv network is presenting it more in the context of story telling. We're given an even fuller appreciation than usual for the long, arduous - often improbable - journey that has brought each athlete to Sydney. l never fail to be deeply moved by these young athletes who have sacrificed everything in pursuit of a dream; who feel like their entire lives come down to one event. How can anyone not share their tears of joy and sorrow? And watching these Olymipics, l'm inspired by the omnipresent sight of the Sydney Opera House, which is the most beautiful piece of modern architecture l've ever seen. l'd love to be in Sydney, Col. l can see myself walking along Bondi Beach at sunset, singing "Waltzing Matilda". Now there's a song. love, jerrysan
