(Thanks Victor for posting it) Vedic astrology apparently operates with both a star sign (the sun sign) and what is called a birth sign, which seems to correspond to the moon sign in Western astrology. I was wondering if someone could tell me what Vedic astrology regards as the difference between the star and the birth sign and what the interplay between these main influences would be in a natal chart ? Guest guest
Hi Amanda, The natal chart in Vedic Astrology is calculated & read according to the Rising not the Sun sign. Most often all signs will move back one sign, but not always; depends upon the degree. For example, in Western, I'm double cancer with Aquarius moon, In Vedic, double Gemini with Capricorn moon. All subsequent charts; progression, compatibility, corporation, rectification of birth, business/profession. etc. etc. are calculated from the natal,( using the Rising sign) as a prerequisite. (not an answer to your question, but perhaps this will help) Love, ~jessica - "mumble cat" <mumblecat > On Tue, 19 Sep 2000 08:06:56 Victor Torrico wrote: > > >http://www.boloji.com/ > > Hi all, > > This may be a little Off Topic, but please indulge me... > this URL contains a link to a Vedic Astrology site. > (Thanks Victor for posting it) > Vedic astrology apparently operates with both a star sign (the sun sign) and what is called a birth sign, which seems to correspond to the moon sign in Western astrology. > > I was wondering if someone could tell me what Vedic astrology regards as the difference between the star and the birth sign and what the interplay between these main influences would be in a natal chart ? > > On beforehand, thanks. > > Love, > > Amanda. > > > > > Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com > > // > > All paths go somewhere. No path goes nowhere. Paths, places, sights, perceptions, and indeed all experiences arise from and exist in and subside back into the Space of Awareness. Like waves rising are not different than the ocean, all things arising from Awareness are of the nature of Awareness. Awareness does not come and go but is always Present. It is Home. Home is where the Heart Is. Jnanis know the Heart to be the Finality of Eternal Being. A true devotee relishes in the Truth of Self-Knowledge, spontaneously arising from within into It Self. In Western astrology we also calculate the rising sign or Ascendant and draw the chart based on that... there is no difference in that regard. The difference you're referring to is because in western astrology of the type you are discussing (tropical), we make our calculations with the earth at the center... which it is, of course, from our perspective. We derive longitude and latitude based on the zodiacal plane - the plane in which the planets lie around the sun. However, due to the earth's wobble on its axis, over long periods our zodiac... the "signs" or constellations around the zodiacal plane... has shifted from the real stellar position. What we call Aries continues to shift away from the stellar Aries at the rate of one degree every 72 years or 50 seconds per year. Some time back, our astronomers began to base their calculations on celestial north, rather than the zodiacal plane... the new longitude and latitude are called right ascension and declination, to avoid confusion. A second type of Western astrology... the sidereal... uses right ascension and declination, and is sun-centered. Experts think this was the original method... and say that western astrology began at some point to use a "new" method and that was when the signs began to deviate from the actual constellations. Vedic astrology is solar-centered, not earth-centered. > All >subsequent charts; progression, compatibility, corporation, rectification of >birth, business/profession. etc. etc. are calculated from the natal,( using >the Rising sign) as a prerequisite. The same is true in Western astrology. What may seem confusing is that there are two types of astrology here... the tropical (earth-centered) and the sidereal (sun-centered). Two astrologers using the two different methods would arrive at the _same_ Ascendant degree for a given birth chart, but they would name it differently according to their systems. Some astrologers use both systems, feeling that there is value in both, and some use some sort of combination. I use tropical astrology, but when I calculate yearly (solar return) charts and monthly (lunar return) charts, I account for precession by multiplying the years of the life by 50 seconds and adding that to the natal Sun or Moon to know exactly where those positions are now.
