Recently, due to dry weather, the water level of the Shalmala river in Karnataka receded, revealing the presence of thousands of Shiva Lingas carved throughout the river bed. Because of these uncountable carvings, the place gets the name “Sahasralinga” (thousand Shiva Lingas).
Sahasralinga has become an important pilgrimage place. On the auspicious day of Mahashivaratri thousands of pilgrims visit Sahasralinga to offer their prayers to Lord Shiva. Each Lingam in the river has a matching carving of Nandi (the Bull carrier of Lord Shiva) facing it.
Shiva Lingas have been worshipped by Hindus for thousands of years. It represents divine power and energy. The worship of Shiva Linga was not confined to India only. Carvings of Shiva Lingas can be found throughout the world in nearly every ancient civilization.
Sahasralinga is a most beautiful place. It is located near Sirsi, in the state of Karnataka. It is on the way to Yellapur from Sirsi, around 17 kms from Sirsi. After Bhairumbe you will have to get down at a bus-stop called Hul Gol bus-stop and walk towards Hul Gol. From the main road it is a distance of around 2 kms.

Om Namah Shivaya, Thank your for your find, I really love most of your articles based on your research. I am not very religious but I a proud Hindu. Your articles ass to our pride. I wonder who made this happen and how. May be a bit or more research will give further information. I shall look forward to your next article on this subject.
It was interesting to know about the river with thousands of Shiva Lingas. It is contextually relevant to share here information about Sri Vijaeendra Theertha,a spiritually powerful Madhwa saint who could through his prowess transform Shiva Lingas in large number, dumped in a tank in Kumbakonam by one Lingarajendra, into idols of Hanuman and Salagrama stones, by the mere sprinkling of sanctified rice in the tank, in the presence of a large number of devotees. The said Lingarajendra had done that clandestinely as a part of his plan to outwit the Madhwa pontiff and lay a claim over the ownership of that tank as belonging to the followers of Saivism and ultimately Sri Vijayeendra, who commanded respect in that place, settled the issue to the satisfaction of all.
Please guide me how to reach the place from Hubli. I am residing in Guntakal near Bellery and i know the trains to reach Hubli. Hence, i request you ex. Hubli ( my preference is by train or in case no train route i prefer by road ). Is Hul Gol bus stop is inbetween Hubli & Sirsi or after sirsi ahead.

KARNATAKA IS A TREASURE OF SUCH WONDERFUL MIRACLES. PEOPLE SAY HIMALAYA BUT KARNATAKA HAS ALSO MOUNTAINS AND THICK FOREST SUCH THAT YOU MAY NEED A TORCH LIGHT TO MOVE IN DURING DAY ALSO. I HAD AN OCCASION TO MOVE IN A VERY FEW PLACES DURING CONSTRUCTION OF KONKAN RAILWAY. DUE TO DEDICATION IN THE TIME BOUND PROJECT I COULD NOT VISIT MANY PLACES.
Impossible to even consider that these are all hand-carved and placed by man. It has to be a divine miracle of Lord Shiva. Thank you for sharing. It is very very beautiful and soothing to the soul. Nice Sri Hanumanji one too!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing the information.
The photographs of the river with the lingas are excellent. A brief narrration describing the origin, the history and present preseration authority would enhance the value of the posting.
The Shivalinga is a reminder to mankind that he is divine. The shape is the same shape as our head. The three stripes represent Creation, Preseservation and Dissolution. The Red dot our Third Eye od supra-consciousness. When we realise this, them we are graced. Thank you for sharing. Infinite Blessings. Om Namashivaya!

This is Really Great wonder of God. I am so grateful to God to See this Sahasra lingas, with great skill in carving.Sahasra means in another meaning, endless, not just thousand,it means there may be many more to be discovered.Hindu researchers should look into it to trace the History.
It is beautiful. Similar ‘thousands(many) of shiva lingas , we have seen in Cambodia near Siam Reap( 60 kms away) at the starting of River Towleen river bed. It is a great wonder to know how far the culture of Hinduism was spread in olden days. At present we need to see how to make the present generation to know and understand the virtues and greatness of this culture.
Wonderful……. Ancient Indians / Hindus were great; really divine!!!! Will the rest of the world acknowledge it? Will they value it?

Just one of the crores of revelations of the Hindu sanathana Dharmas & is not a surprise for a true Hindu
Definitely proud to be an Hindu – what our Religion teaches us is to be caring and loving to all – no matter the cast or creed but it sad to see that we live in a society where our culture and values are being lost or disgraced!!

I am only wondering how is it that people are not aware that such a place with a thousand Shivlingas in a river exist. I was amazed to see such beautiful picturS. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
Such an immense amount of time has obviously been devoted to creating these carvings, that maybe the carving was not all done when the riverbed was exposed. Maybe yogis like this saint were secretly at work carving these magnificent forms whilst in a breathless state of meditation under the waves of the river. Another possibility is that the carvings were instantly made manifest through the prayer of enlightened yogis working with God.
What a beautiful display of Divine art. It is heart warming and soul satisfying.
Some work on it is warranted:
1. When were these Sahasra Linga carved, during which kingdom?
2. Are they man made or self-appeared?
3. Any scientific dating planned?
After all, this is a wonderful display of Divine art, no matter what the origin.
Thank you immensely for bringing this uniqe carvings to the attention to the world.
Om namah shivay. Thank-you so much for this priceless information. Keep up the good work.
